Shoplift alternatives: when you outgrow theme testing

Last reviewed: 28 July 2026. Every Shoplift fact below was read from Shoplift's own surfaces — shoplift.ai, docs.shoplift.ai and its Shopify App Store listing — on 26 July 2026. Where its two pricing surfaces disagree, both are quoted.

The verdict

Credit first: what Shoplift does better than anyone

  • Native theme testing. Variants are real Shopify themes and templates, edited in Shopify's editor — no overlay tool to learn, nothing to re-wire when the theme updates. For "does this homepage beat that one," it is the right instrument.
  • Documentation that tells the truth. Shoplift publishes its flicker window in milliseconds, its PageSpeed cost, exactly what happens when you exceed your plan, and a flat "no" on checkout testing. That candour is rare, and it has earned the rating.
  • Shopify Plus Certified — announced 12 December 2024. The certification is real and it unblocks procurement; "the only certified A/B testing app" is Shoplift's own wording, so treat that half as marketing.
  • The ecosystem works. Post-purchase upsell apps, subscription tests, and every major one-click checkout — Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal — are tracked correctly through the order.

One parity worth naming so it doesn't decide anything falsely: both tools are Bayesian. Shoplift ships Bayesian predictive analysis with duration forecasting; Mtrix's probability-to-be-best reporting is sequential, built to be watched while the test runs. Statistics is not the tiebreaker here.

The four walls, in Shoplift's own words

1. The meter. Shoplift is priced by total monthly store visitors — "not tested visitors." Cross your band, and from its FAQ: "your tests will be temporarily paused until you upgrade your plan, or your current plan rolls over to the next billing cycle… Shoplift will also suspend the collection of visitor data." The ladder that follows: Core covers up to 50k visitors at $99/mo ($74 on annual billing); Advanced is $399/mo ($299 annual); Pro is listed annual-only at $699/mo on shoplift.ai/pricing and sold at $999/mo on the App Store — the two surfaces disagree, so both are quoted. On Shopify, growing traffic means climbing that ladder whether or not you test more.

2. The checkout. From its docs: "Shoplift does not currently support testing Shopify's checkout pages directly. Shopify restricts third-party apps from modifying the checkout flow." The App Store listing shows "Checkout" under Works with — that is order tracking through checkout, not checkout testing. What it can test are the pages that feed checkout: product pages, carts, pricing.

3. The blank. From its own pricing-page FAQ: "our anti-flicker script momentarily blanks out your pages to ensure shoppers don't see new experiences, but this is typically resolved within 150 milliseconds (and as low as 90 milliseconds)." On speed cost its two surfaces differ again — "about a 2-4 point reduction" in Google's page performance tool on the pricing page, "approximately a 2-point reduction" in the docs.

4. The instrument only measures. Shoplift reports the test. It doesn't record the sessions inside each variant, map the clicks, group the errors, or keep an event history. When variant B loses, the why lives in another tool.

What to run on the store you keep

First, the boundary from the verdict, stated precisely: on a Shopify store, a Mtrix experiment applies a CSS class and two data attributes to the page — element-level changes, targeted audiences, split-URL tests. Not a duplicated theme. Theme-vs-theme stays Shoplift's job. And price on a kept store is not Mtrix's job either: Shoplift sells it as a beta on the $399 tier, and the tool built around it is Intelligems.

What Mtrix brings to the store you keep is everything around the test:

  • No meter, no pause. No cap on experiments — concurrent or monthly, on any plan — and 100% of sessions captured; sampling is an opt-in control, not a billing tier. Growing traffic is the point, not a penalty.
  • Server-side assignment. Every variant decision is made in Mtrix's backend and stored against the visitor for 30 days — and on a headless storefront (Hydrogen, Next.js, SvelteKit) the variant is rendered server-side before the page ships, so there is nothing to blank.
  • Four test types, first one live in minutes. A/B, multivariate, split URL and mask URL, with mutually exclusive tests built in, and a first experiment configured and live about five minutes after the script is on the store.
  • The why, attached. Every experiment carries the session recordings of the shoppers inside it — filter replays by variant and watch the losing arm lose. Events and purchases are kept three years (replays one month); click and scroll heatmaps and error tracking ride the same script.

When the theme editor is the ceiling

Theme testing optimises within the theme. At some point the question stops being "which duplicate wins" and becomes "why is the store built this way at all" — a platform question:

  • The builder replaces theme duplication. Edit any page live, undo in one click, publish to the edge — dynamic pages driven by product and customer data, no theme queue and no developer.
  • The checkout wall comes down. On a store built on Mtrix, the checkout is yours to test — including running Mtrix's built-in checkout against the Shopify checkout you arrive with, a split Mtrix's clients have measured at 14% better.*
  • Moving is included. Import from your repo, a URL, or Figma; a human finishes the setup; orders and customer history transfer; live within one week at the outside — guaranteed. The full path is on switching from Shopify.

FAQ

What does Shoplift cost?
Three plans, priced by total monthly store visitors: Core at $99/mo ($74 on annual) up to 50k visitors, Advanced at $399/mo ($299 annual), and Pro — listed annual-only at $699/mo on shoplift.ai/pricing but sold at $999/mo on the App Store; the two surfaces disagree, so check the one you'll buy through. All plans carry a 14-day trial. Both read 26 July 2026.
Can Shoplift test Shopify's checkout?
No — its own docs: "Shoplift does not currently support testing Shopify's checkout pages directly." The "Checkout" badge on its App Store listing means order tracking through checkout, not checkout testing. It can test the pages that feed checkout — product pages, carts, pricing — and it tracks orders correctly through Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal.
What happens when I exceed Shoplift's visitor limit?
From its FAQ: "your tests will be temporarily paused until you upgrade your plan, or your current plan rolls over to the next billing cycle… Shoplift will also suspend the collection of visitor data." The count is total store visitors, not tested visitors — so a traffic spike pauses your programme even if the test itself is small.
Does Mtrix do theme testing on Shopify?
No. On a Shopify store a Mtrix experiment applies a CSS class and two data attributes — element-level changes, audience targeting and split-URL tests, with server-side assignment and the session replays attached. If duplicating a theme and splitting traffic between the two is the job, Shoplift is the right tool and this page says so.
Is Shoplift only for Shopify Plus?
No — nothing in its docs requires a particular Shopify plan for the core product. Shoplift is Shopify Plus Certified (announced 12 December 2024), which is a badge, not a prerequisite; the "first and only certified testing app" framing is Shoplift's own marketing language.
