Add-to-cart rate = sessions with at least one add to cart ÷ total sessions × 100. That's the number in your Shopify admin. Before you compare it to anyone: the most-cited publishers measure it four different ways, so a "4.6% average" and a "6.07% average" aren't a range — they're different measurements. Fix your denominator first, then read the tables.

The calculator

Two fields give you the rate. Add reached-checkout sessions, orders and average order value and it returns the rest of the funnel — cart-stage drop-off, checkout completion, abandonment, revenue per session — plus where you sit against the published bands.

The formula, and why your two tools disagree

Four definitions are in circulation, from three publishers. Shopify's and Dynamic Yield's are quoted from their own pages, read 28 July 2026; the two GA4 rows are paraphrased, not quoted, which is why they carry no quotation marks.

Shopify divides by all your sessions. GA4 divides only by people who reached a product. Everyone who landed on a blog post and never saw one sits in Shopify's denominator, not GA4's. How far apart the two land is your traffic mix, not a published constant: if 60% of your sessions never reach a product page, Shopify divides by roughly 2.5 times more of them. That ratio is yours to compute. Run heavy top-of-funnel paid social and Shopify looks bad while GA4 looks fine. Neither is wrong.

Dynamic Yield's rate is item-weighted — one visitor adding four items counts four times, part of why 6.07% sits above the Shopify averages. GA4's counters split that: itemsAddedToCart counts units, addToCarts counts events, so four items in one action is one add-to-cart. Drop either into a session-based formula and your rate is wrong in a different direction each time.

What a good add-to-cart rate is

Two publishers have first-party, citable figures — one three years old, neither on the denominator most readers need. Different measurements. Don't read them as a range.

Global average 6.07%, from "data aggregated across 200M+ monthly unique users from 400+ brands, collected over 300M+ total sessions" (marketing.dynamicyield.com, read 28 July 2026) — a product-page-view denominator, so not comparable to the table above. Food & Beverage is the highest industry at 10.19%, Luxury & Jewelry the lowest at 1.72%; EMEA 6.48%, Americas 6.1%, APAC 3.16% (add-to-cart-rate, read 28 July 2026, showing June — this dataset re-renders monthly).

There is no current, DTC-specific, session-based benchmark. Littledata's is Shopify-only and three years old; Dynamic Yield's is an enterprise customer base on a different denominator. We left out figures circulating without a source ("5–15% is the industry average"), and two datasets that don't carry the metric at all — IRP Commerce's live UK dataset and Contentsquare's free benchmark pages (both checked 26 July 2026). Mtrix doesn't publish one either: we have the data and haven't cleared it for publication.

Your add-to-cart rate is fine. Your checkout isn't.

The most useful finding in the current data is counter-intuitive: mobile has the highest add-to-cart rate and the worst outcome after it.

Phones are better at getting things into the cart and worse at everything after. If your rate is at or above the published averages and revenue still isn't moving, the fix isn't on the product page — another round of button tests will find nothing.

Baymard's meta-average of 50 studies puts documented cart abandonment at 70.22% (page last updated 22 September 2025); Dynamic Yield's first-party measurement puts it at 77.54% (cart-abandonment-rate, read 28 July 2026). Third-party studies against one vendor's live data — don't average them. Either way, roughly three of every four carts your calculator just counted never became an order. Purchases ties orders, line items and refunds back to the sessions that produced them, once the cart carries the Mtrix session note — so that drop-off is a report, not a reconciliation.

What to do when your number is low

Two honest things first. If you only want the number, you don't need a calculator — Shopify computes it in your admin, free, under the field name "Added to cart rate." Open Analytics, read it, close this tab. And if you only want to watch a session, Microsoft Clarity is free: "Clarity is a free service forever. You never encounter traffic limits or are compelled to upgrade to a paid version" (learn.microsoft.com/en-us/clarity/faq, updated 30 June 2026). Recordings and heatmaps, no card, no ceiling. If budget is the constraint, start there — Mtrix has no free tier and it would waste your time to pretend otherwise.

Then, in order. The first three cost nothing.

1. Check the denominator first. If blog, collection and paid-social landing traffic sits in your session count, you're measuring traffic mix, not your product page. Segment to sessions that saw a product page and recalculate. And if you run "Buy it now" buttons, check whether your analytics records an add-to-cart for those sessions at all — express checkout can show a low add-to-cart rate beside a healthy conversion rate.

2. Split by device. Mobile should run above desktop. If yours is below, that's a findable defect at a specific screen width, not a strategy question.

3. Watch the sessions that saw the product page and didn't add. Rage clicks on a swatch that isn't clickable. A dead click on a size chart. A sold-out variant that silently disables the button. Session replay detects rage clicks, dead clicks and form abandonment; heatmaps show whether the button is even reached on a phone.

4. Check for errors on the product page. A JavaScript exception in the variant selector kills add-to-cart silently — the session just ends and your analytics shows nothing. Error tracking groups four thousand occurrences into one issue, and you can open the session that produced it.

5. Then test, and test something big. Required traffic scales with the inverse square of the effect you're chasing, so a whole product-page layout is testable where a button colour isn't. Test on the higher baseline, too: on Littledata's averages — 4.6% add-to-cart against 1.4% conversion — testing on add-to-cart rate needs roughly a third of the traffic that testing on conversion rate does at the same relative effect, and the gap widens the further apart your two baselines sit (sample size calculator). Mtrix experiments report add-to-cart rate, conversion rate and revenue per visitor together.

6. Confirm the win on orders. A rising add-to-cart rate isn't automatically good. Make the button bigger, cheaper to press and harder to avoid, and the rate rises while abandonment rises with it. It's a proxy — it moves without a single extra order.

FAQ

What is a good add-to-cart rate?
For Shopify stores, Littledata's 2023 benchmark of 2,800 sites puts the average at 4.6%, the top 20% above 7.5% and the top 10% above 9.6%. Dynamic Yield's global average is 6.07%, but on a product-page-view denominator — a different measurement, not a higher one. Compare yourself to the one whose denominator matches yours.
Why doesn't my Shopify add-to-cart rate match GA4?
They divide by different things. Shopify's "Added to cart rate" is sessions with cart additions ÷ all sessions. GA4's cartToViewRate divides by users who viewed the product. Anyone who never reached a product page sits in Shopify's denominator and not in GA4's, so the gap measures your traffic mix — compute it from your own numbers rather than trusting a published multiple. And GA4's itemsAddedToCart counts units: a quantity-three add is three.
Is add-to-cart rate the same as cart abandonment rate?
No — opposite ends of the same step. Add-to-cart rate is how many sessions put something in the cart; abandonment is how many of those carts never became an order. Dynamic Yield states it as 1 − (completed purchases ÷ carts created) × 100 and measures 77.54%; Baymard's meta-average of 50 studies is 70.22% (both read 28 July 2026). Cite one, with its scope attached.
Should I optimise for add-to-cart rate or conversion rate?
Test on add-to-cart rate, decide on conversion rate. The higher baseline needs far less traffic to reach a conclusion, which is what makes testing possible at DTC volumes. But it's a proxy: an add-to-cart win that doesn't show up in orders isn't a win.
Where do I find these numbers?
Shopify: Analytics → Reports, field name "Added to cart rate" ("sessions with cart additions / sessions"). GA4: cartToViewRate, plus addToCarts and itemsAddedToCart for raw counts.
